When it comes to custom cars the word carbon fiber can be heard a lot. Carbon fiber parts have been used on racing cars and in aviation because of its high tensile strength, light weight, and ability to handle heat.
Almost everything on a car can be made from carbon fiber although sometimes it is not a good idea. Carbon fiber flexes easily but cracks under a sharp impact which is why it is not used on bumpers.
Carbon fiber is made from micro thin fibers being coated in carbon and then strung together into a string and then woven together with more of these into a diamond type pattern to stay together.
This fabric is used like fiberglass is by putting layers of it over a mold with a foam core in between. Then it is soaked in vinyl esther resin. A vacuum process sucks out the air and seals the fabric with the now hardened core.
Carbon fiber is an expensive material but with the strength of steel and the lightweight of fiberglass is becoming more popular.
The hood, fenders, side mirrors, dashboard, door panels, door handles,spoilers, reinforcement bars, valve covers and trunk lid are common places to find carbon fiber. Also it is used for aesthetic purposes only because of the pattern and color the carbon fiber has.
